What Is a Buying Committee? Definition for B2B Sales

A buying committee is the group of people who jointly influence or decide whether an organization makes a B2B purchase. It is rarely a formal body. The definition, what it is often confused with, and a short example.

A buying committee is the group of people who jointly influence or decide whether an organization makes a B2B purchase. Its members usually come from several departments, each judges the same proposal against their own responsibilities, and any one of them can stop the deal.

The group rarely has a formal membership list or regular meetings. People join it because the purchase affects their work, their budget or the risks they are responsible for.

What It Is Often Confused With

A buying committee is not the decision-maker. Many sales reps assume they only need to convince the person who signs. In practice, that person usually asks the user department, IT, finance and others for their view first. If any of them has a concern, the signature is hard to get.

A buying committee is not the organization’s formal committee. A hospital’s value analysis committee or a company’s procurement committee has a charter and minutes. A buying committee is broader: it includes everyone who shapes the purchase, and a formal committee is only one part of it.

It is closely related to the decision-making unit (DMU), but the emphasis differs. “Buying committee” names the group of people. The decision-making unit view breaks that group down by department and responsibility, so a rep can track where each unit stands and what is holding it back.

An Example

A regional hospital is evaluating new infusion pumps. Nursing runs the trial and states the need. IT has to confirm the pumps can connect to hospital systems. Finance has to confirm the budget. Procurement decides whether a tender is required. The department head signs the purchase request. Together, these five make up the deal’s buying committee. Even if nursing is delighted, the deal will not move while IT is still waiting for specifications.
