MEDDPICC is a framework for qualifying complex B2B opportunities, named for the first letters of its eight elements. It helps a rep check whether a deal really has what it needs to close: who controls the budget, how the customer decides, how the paperwork runs, and who is driving it internally.

The framework grew out of MEDDIC, which originated in US enterprise software sales in the 1990s. Paper Process and Competition were added later, giving MEDDPICC.

The Eight Elements

LetterElementWhat it means
MMetricsThe specific measures the customer will use to judge success
EEconomic BuyerThe person who controls the budget and can approve the spend
DDecision CriteriaThe standards the customer uses to compare options
DDecision ProcessThe steps and people involved in reaching the decision
PPaper ProcessContracting, purchasing and legal steps
IIdentify PainThe problem that makes acting necessary for the customer
CChampionThe person inside the customer who actively drives the deal
CCompetitionThe other options the customer is considering, including doing nothing

Common Misunderstandings

MEDDPICC is not a sales process. It does not tell a rep what to do at each step. It shows what information a deal is still missing. A blank field is a risk that has not been seen yet.

Filling it in is not the same as qualifying. The most common problem with MEDDPICC is that it is completed once and never updated. The contact changes, a new decision unit appears, the budget slips — and the record still reflects last month. A qualification is only as reliable as the interactions that keep each field current.

It complements the decision-unit view. The economic buyer, champion and decision process in MEDDPICC all need to be checked against the decision-making units inside the customer, or it is easy to see only one or two people.

An Example

A regional hospital is evaluating new infusion pumps. Running the deal through MEDDPICC, the rep finds that the pain (risk of infusion errors) and the champion (the nurse manager) are clear. But it is still unclear who the economic buyer is, nobody knows how long IT’s review will take within the decision process, and no one has asked whether the paper process requires a tender. Three of the eight elements are blank, and those three are where the rep goes next.

For the difference between a champion and an economic buyer, see champion vs economic buyer: what is the difference?. To track each decision unit inside the customer through a live deal, see decision-making units in enterprise sales.

VINEQRA is not a MEDDPICC form tool, but it records the interactions with each stakeholder by decision unit, so fields such as economic buyer, champion and decision process have real interactions behind them. See how VINEQRA works
